A very powerful, naturally occurring
polyunsaturated fatty acid called
conjugated linoleic acid, or CLA, has in
recent years attracted intense interest
- and intense scrutiny - for its role in
health and maintaining a normal body
composition.
Both animal and human studies suggest
CLA may be helpful in lowering body fat
and preserving lean body mass.
I'm sure you'll agree, preserving muscle
tissue can be just as important as
shedding excess fat. You want to lose
fat, not muscles. And that's what CLA
may help you do.
Animal studies suggest that CLA may
actually boost the metabolic rate and
help the body burn calories faster.
A study from the American Journal of
Clinical Nutrition found that
participants who took 3.2 grams of CLA
per day experienced one-fifth of a pound
loss in fat mass a week, compared to
those receiving a placebo.
And when combined with exercise, the
results became even greater.
Yet another study, also from the
American Journal of Clinical Nutrition,
suggests that CLA may significantly help
overweight postmenopausal women maintain
healthy blood glucose levels that are
already in the normal range.
While the study was of postmenopausal
women only, I personally believe that
this discovery may have exciting
implications for anyone over 45 and
overweight.
How exactly does CLA work?
According to the leading CLA researcher,
Michael W. Pariza of the University of
Wisconsin-Madison, "CLA keeps little fat
cells from getting big... perhaps by
blocking certain enzymes that let fat
cells swell."
CLA appears to block fat uptake and then
increase the speed of fat burning.
Fat can be used as energy for the
muscles instead of being stored as fat.
And in doing so, it ensures that the
total mass of muscles doesn't decrease.
Most researchers agree that a total of
3,000 mg or three grams of CLA divided
into three dosages per day at mealtime
is required to help reduce fat.
Often, the greatest challenge with a
diet is maintaining your fat loss. CLA
may be useful after diets to maintain
the progress you've achieved.
